Biography

Sergey Brin was born in Moscow and emigrated to the US with his family at age six to escape Soviet antisemitism. His father was a mathematics professor; his mother worked at NASA. He studied math and computer science at the University of Maryland before enrolling in Stanford's PhD program, where he met Larry Page. Together they built Google, co-founding it in 1998 in a Menlo Park garage.

Brin served as President of Technology at Google until 2011, then as Alphabet President until 2019. His technical contributions included the PageRank algorithm and early data infrastructure that let Google scale globally. Since stepping back from operations, he has spent time on flying cars and airship technology — he reportedly owns a large private airship called Pathfinder 1.

Brin returned to Alphabet more actively in 2023 to help respond to the ChatGPT moment, which threatened Google's core search business. His re-engagement helped accelerate Google's Gemini AI launch. On the personal side, Brin is known for extreme sports, trapeze performances at company events, and a reported estrangement from Elon Musk following personal events in 2022.

Elon MuskvsSergey Brin

Brin and Musk were part of the same Silicon Valley social circle for years, with Brin and Page providing early Tesla investment during its near-bankruptcy in 2008. A reported personal falling out around 2022 led Brin to sell his Tesla shares. Meanwhile, their companies — Google vs xAI, Waymo vs Tesla FSD — compete directly in AI and autonomous driving.
