Biography
Larry Ellison co-founded Oracle in 1977 — originally called Software Development Laboratories — based on a paper by IBM's Edgar Codd describing relational databases. His insight was that Codd's ideas had enormous commercial potential that IBM itself was ignoring. Oracle became the world's dominant enterprise database software company, and Ellison became one of the defining characters of Silicon Valley: brilliant, combative, theatrical, and right more often than his detractors liked.
He stepped down as Oracle CEO in 2014 but remains CTO and executive chairman with a net worth of around $185 billion. At 80, he still runs product strategy, still shows up to earnings calls, and still feuds publicly with competitors. His personal life has matched his business life in scale: four marriages, a half-dozen grand estates, and the ownership of roughly 98% of the Hawaiian island of Lana'i, which he purchased in 2012 for approximately $300 million.
Unlike most of Musk's rivals, Ellison is firmly in Elon's camp. He invested $1 billion in Musk's Twitter acquisition in 2022 and has been publicly effusive about him. Oracle's cloud infrastructure also hosts X (Twitter), making the two men business partners as well as friends — a unusual arrangement in the competitive tech landscape.
Did You Know?
Ellison owns approximately 98% of the Hawaiian island of Lana'i — 88,000 acres — and has since invested over $500M in sustainable agriculture and green energy on the island.
Elon MuskvsLarry Ellison
Unlike most of Elon's rivals, Ellison is an enthusiastic ally. He co-invested $1 billion in Musk's Twitter acquisition, their companies have deepened ties through Oracle cloud hosting X, and both are famously eccentric billionaires with island purchases and outsized personalities. Still, their AI and cloud businesses do compete.
